The Power of Vacations: Using Breaks to Reassess, Innovate and Grow

As a business leader, especially for women who juggle multiple roles, the concept of taking time off can seem like a luxury rather than a necessity. I’ve experienced this firsthand. I often found myself checking emails and thinking about work even during family vacations, driven by a deep-seated belief that my constant presence was essential. But through my journey, I’ve learned a crucial lesson: taking breaks is not just about relaxation—it’s about empowering your business and yourself to reach new heights.

For many women, especially those who have come from corporate backgrounds or traditional work environments, it feels counterintuitive to step away from the business. There’s a pervasive belief that being constantly available equates to dedication and success. However, the truth is that creating space for yourself can significantly benefit both you and your business.

Dan Sullivan, a respected business coach, highlights that vacations are vital for visionary leaders. They provide a necessary break from routine, allowing space for creativity and strategic thinking. For women in business, this break is particularly important. It’s an opportunity to disconnect from daily demands and reconnect with the bigger picture.

Reflecting on my own experiences, I realize how challenging it was to let go of the reins. I saw myself as indispensable, thinking that my constant involvement was crucial for my business’s success. However, the most profound growth moments for my clients—and for me—came from stepping away and creating time for innovation and strategic thinking. For instance, one client was initially hesitant to take a break, fearing it would disrupt her business. Yet, when she finally took that step, her team emerged stronger and more proactive. They tackled challenges with newfound confidence and brought innovative ideas to the table.

It’s important to understand that taking time off isn’t a sign of weakness or neglect—it’s a strategic move that demonstrates trust in your team and a commitment to their growth. In my work, I encourage clients to delegate tasks and involve their teams in identifying areas for personal and professional development. One effective technique is to ask employees to list tasks they’d like to delegate and skills they want to develop. This practice not only empowers your team but also fosters a culture of growth and collaboration.

The benefits of creating a business environment that supports time away extend beyond personal well-being. In 2024, many business brokers are seeing more business owners look to sell their businesses because they are “done” with the employee struggles. Many are disappointed that they aren’t getting the numbers they would like on the business valuations.

Businesses with strong, independent teams are more valuable and attract higher prices. When a business owner can step back and let the team handle day-to-day operations, it signals a well-structured and resilient business model.

Creating a lifestyle that aligns with who you are at your core is not just about personal satisfaction. It’s about setting an example and inspiring your team to embrace a similar mindset. When you prioritize your own well-being and demonstrate the value of taking strategic breaks, you foster a culture of trust and resilience. This not only enhances your team’s performance but also contributes to a stronger, more sellable business.

So, to all the incredible women leaders out there: remember that stepping away from the daily grind is not a failure—it’s a powerful, strategic decision. It’s about empowering yourself, your team and your business. Trust in your team’s abilities, invest in your own growth and embrace the transformative power of vacations. By doing so, you’ll not only enhance your own well-being, but also build a more resilient and successful business.
