Virtual Connect & Learn: Boomers, X, Y, and Z – Communication Strategies

February 13, 2020 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Sometimes we find ourselves generalizing the behaviors and attitudes of a whole generation. We overlook the many individual characteristics of a person such as personality, values, intelligence, talents, skills and more. While one’s generation is one of those influences on an individual, we all have some bias and perceptions of people from the generation(s) before and after us. Where there are differences, there can be the potential for conflict.

To preempt and resolve conflict, we first need to understand the differences and then “lean in” to learn how to best work with those who are different. Only then can we learn to appreciate what other people can bring to the situation and become productive together.

In this session, we will participate in an activity to understand the various generations—the world they grew up in, their home life and their work environment. We will draw conclusions that help us to understand people from the various generations better and use that information to communicate better and work together.

You will take away:

  • A broad view of the various generations currently in the workplace – characteristics of each generation based on their different world, family, and work influences

  • Strategies for people of each generation to employ in working with, communicating with, and influencing people from different generations
