THIS YEAR’S THEME

This year’s theme is “Leading the Way.” A Pew Research Centre report shows the majority of Americans think women are just as capable of being good political and business leaders as men. They are perceived as equals when it comes to leadership qualities like intelligence and capacity for innovation. On other qualities—honesty, fairness, compassion and willingness to compromise—women are seen as superior. After all, the 114th Congress includes a record number of women (104). On the corporate front, 26 women now lead as CEOs of Fortune 500 companies—up from zero in 1995. And as we know well at NAWBO, women business owners are the fastest-growing sector in the U.S. economy today, and small businesses owned by women grow at a 50% faster rate than those owned by men. Still, though, the congresswomen only make up 19% of Congress; female CEOs are only 5% of all Fortune 500 CEOs; and women business owners still face more challenges in starting and growing their businesses than men, from access to credit to procurement opportunities. In this pivotal election year, the theme of the National Women’s Business Conference, Leading the Way, will celebrate women’s incredible influence and accomplishments to date and inspire you to reach even higher and farther in the future.
