At NAWBO, we often talk about the power of community, connection and collaboration, but underneath all of that is something even deeper that binds us together: the power to overcome.
This month’s 50th anniversary National Women’s Business Conference reminded us of that in powerful and deeply personal ways. It was an extraordinary celebration of the past, present and future of NAWBO and of women’s entrepreneurship, and woven throughout the keynotes, panels and conversations were stories of resilience, grit and perseverance.
We heard from past NAWBO presidents and chairs who shared the challenges they faced, from creating a space to collaborate and support one another to gaining access to capital and contracts to balancing businesses with societal expectations. Their stories reminded us that every step forward in the past 50 years has come because a woman refused to give up…because she chose to rise up and push through.
We also heard from this year’s incredible keynote speakers, including the inspiring Ashley Judd and dynamic Cynt Marshall. Each of them shared personal stories of overcoming trauma, adversity and loss and how they transformed those experiences into a force for good. Their journeys reinforced something we know deep down as women business owners: that adversity does not define us. What defines us is how we rise.
As women entrepreneurs, we all encounter our share of roadblocks—some external, some internal. Whether you’re navigating economic uncertainty, managing a growing team, juggling family demands or facing burnout, know this: You are not alone. Every NAWBO member has faced something and moved through it stronger, wiser and more empowered.
Here are a few simple practices we can all lean on when facing challenges:
- Pause and reflect: Step back and assess the situation with clarity. The answers are often there, we just need space and stillness to see them.
- Lean on your community: Reach out to your NAWBO sisters. They’ve been where you are. Let their experiences guide and support you.
- Focus on your “why”: When the path gets rough, reconnect with your mission and purpose. They’ll reignite your drive.
- Take one small step: Overcoming doesn’t always mean a big leap. It can be a series of small, intentional actions forward.
NAWBO’s 2025 award winners are shining examples of this. From building businesses in rural communities to transforming personal passion into national success, each has faced and overcome her own set of obstacles. Their accomplishments and the recognition they’ve received are a celebration of what’s possible when we persevere. You’ll read some of their stories as well as a recap of our remarkable 50th event in this issue of NAWBO ONE.
As I stood on stage to close the awards gala, after being officially installed as NAWBO’s new National Board Chair just a few days prior, I felt both incredibly honored and deeply humbled. This moment marked not only a new chapter in my leadership journey, but the start of NAWBO’s next 50 years. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Dr. Janis Shinkawa for her visionary leadership as our 2024-2025 Chair. She has passed the “baton” with grace and strength, and I’m proud to carry it forward.
As we reflect on the power of “Overcome” together this month, I invite you to embrace it as your own theme. Whatever challenge you’re facing, know that you have the tools, the heart and the support through your NAWBO community and our broader network to move through it and come out even stronger.
I look forward to the year ahead—one where we continue to overcome, innovate and lead boldly together.
