NAWBO National Supports Law Aimed at Increasing the Amount of Women in STEM disciplines

(Washington, D.C. February 28, 2017)—The National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) is applauding the advancement of the Promoting Women in Entrepreneurship Act of 2017.  The bill, which enjoyed bipartisan support in Congress, was signed into law by President Trump today.   The goal of the legislation is to recruit and support women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields and build on existing efforts by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to increase women’s participation in STEM education and research by expanding those efforts to help recruit and support women in STEM fields as they commercialize their research.

“The STEM fields represent an opportunity for women to expand and pursue their entrepreneurial dreams but as we know too few women are moving into this space.  We are proud to see this bi-partisan legislation we supported become law and hope it will address the existing gap of women in these important fields,” said Teresa Meares, NAWBO National Board Chair.  “NAWBO was founded in 1975 to advocate on behalf of all women entrepreneurs.  Our founders and subsequent leaders opened up and expanded opportunities for women business owners in all sectors, of all sizes and in all stages of business development. We are proud to carry on that legacy to this day and will continue to support legislation that expands opportunities for women business owners.”

The Promoting Women in Entrepreneurship Act of 2017 was sponsored by Congresswoman Elizabeth Etsy in the U.S. House and Senators Dean Heller and Amy Klobuchar in the U.S. Senate.
