NAWBO continues year-long commemoration of pivotal legislation

Washington, D.C. —Today, the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) is applauding the U.S. Senate for their passage of a resolution marking the 30th anniversary of the Women’s Business Ownership Act, commonly referred to as H.R. 5050.  The resolution was passed through the U.S. Senate with bipartisan support.

“On behalf of NAWBO members nationwide, I want to thank the members of both political parties who came together to pass this resolution commemorating this pivotal piece of legislation,” said Molly Gimmel, NAWBO National Board Chair.  “Thirty years ago, NAWBO leaders stepped forward to call attention to disparities in the opportunities available to women business owners.  Three decades later, we are proud to celebrate their accomplishment and carry on their legacy as the voice of our nation’s women business owners.”

Last month NAWBO Institute for Entrepreneurial Development Board Chair Loreen Gilbert moderated a panel during the National Women’s Business Council (NWBC) 30th Anniversary of H.R. 5050 event.  The panel featured Virginia Littlejohn and Phyllis Hill Slater, both of whom are former NWBC Council Members and both of whom served pivotal roles as NAWBO advocates during the push for H.R. 5050.

Earlier this year, NAWBO released “Spotlight on H.R. 5050: The Bill that Changed Everything for Women Business Owners.” This white paper, sponsored by The PNC Financial Services Group, reflects on the provisions that transformed the course for women business owners . The white paper includes anecdotes of NAWBO leaders who played a role in H.R. 5050, as well as assessments of the current status of women business owners from NAWBO leaders and luminaries in the women business owner community including SBA Administrator Linda McMahon and former NWBC Chair Carla Harris.
