History of NAWBO
NAWBO traces its origin to a group of 12 Washington, DC, women business owners who began meeting informally in December 1974 to trade information about federal contracts, bank credit and other issues related to their business.
The Association of Women Business Owners (AWBO) was incorporated on July 7, 1975, and in October 1976, became the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO).
Almost 40 years later, NAWBO has 93 chapters and over 8,000 members. NAWBO helps women evolve their businesses by sharing resources. It provides a single, powerful voice to shape economic and public policy at local, state and federal levels.
NAWBO remains the only dues-based national organization representing the interests of all women entrepreneurs in all types of businesses.
How did NAWBO come to New Mexico?
When Judie Framan of Judith Framan Associates moved her public relations firm to New Mexico in 1993, she saw a need to develop a NAWBO chapter to encourage women business owners to work together on issues that affect them and to create a voice and vision for themselves locally, statewide and nationally.
Grace McGartland, then president of NAWBO National, and Judie worked together to coordinate the efforts of chartering a chapter in 1993 in New Mexico. Because of her intense commitment and involvement in starting the chapter, Judie is frequently referred to as our “Founding Mother.”

COMMITTEES - Get Involved!
We provide a variety of opportunities for members to participate in our chapter life and encourage their active involvement in our committees. Our primary goals are to enable members to improve their leadership skills by applying their unique talents and interests to serve our members.
All chapter members are welcome and encouraged to get involved. No matter how much time you have to devote, we can find something that will match your interests. Whether it’s an hour a month or assistance with a specific program or event, your help will be appreciated and acknowledged. And best of all, you and your business will benefit from the new contacts you make both within and outside NAWBO.
Communications
The Communications Committee is responsible for the chapter's Constant Contact announcements, the Chapter Website, and Public Relations, including press releases, NAWBO presence at non-NAWBO events and works with graphic designers on promotional displays, brochures, and other advertising and marketing.
Economic Development (Corporate Partners)
This is a multi-focused committee. One area is fundraising for the chapter through Corporate Partners. The other focus is Procurement (matching women businesses with major corporate and government contracts) and Capital (matching women-owned businesses with sources of capital to help them grow).
Education & Leadership (Programs)
The Education & Leadership Committee is responsible for Monthly Programs, Education, and Facilities, which includes coordinating our monthly meeting location, arranges for any needed equipment and the menu.
Finance
The Finance Committee develops and implements the chapter’s financial policies and procedures. Members with or without a financial background and those who want to learn about the financial world are welcome. Finance Committee members are the friendly faces members and guests see when they check in for the monthly meetings.
Membership
The Membership Committee recruits and mentors new members, maintains contact to assess their satisfaction with NAWBO, answers questions that members may have about their membership and welcomes members at all activities. It also coordinates the Member Appreciation and New Member Orientation events.
Public Policy
- Liason to the NAWBO Public Action Committee (PAC)
- Organizer of the annual Speak Out where NAWBO members talk and legislators listen
- Educational and Influential - we inform members on the public policy issues at the national and state levels and foster change for women owned businesses.
- Join the Public Policy committee and help mold the small business climate in the state and in the nation. Breakfast meetings are held the first Wednesday of the month.
