Heritage as a Foundation: Building Future Success on the Strength of Leaders

Aug 9, 2024

NAWBO DFW kicked off the 2024-25 board year with a luncheon at Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen. We were honored to host Kaye Flewellen, a celebrated celebrity stylist, salon owner, and community leader, as our keynote speaker. The event, themed “Heritage as a Foundation: Building Future Success on the Strength of Leaders,” highlighted how the wisdom and experiences of those before us can serve as a strong foundation for future growth.

Kaye shared her inspiring journey from humble beginnings—doing hair in her dorm room at Baylor University—to becoming a trusted stylist for celebrities and political figures alike. Her story, which included being laid off from her first job before she even started, is a testament to resilience and determination. Despite early setbacks, Kaye didn’t just survive; she thrived, using her heritage and personal drive to create a successful career that now includes working with Congressional delegates and serving as a CDC ambassador.

Key takeaways from Kaye’s talk included:

  • Mastering Your Mind: Kaye emphasized the importance of recognizing your value and embracing your role as a “mover and shaker” in the world. Self-belief is the cornerstone of all success.
  • Creating Your Own Niche: In a world full of competition, Kaye encouraged everyone to carve out their own space—one that is uniquely theirs.
  • Establishing Unshakable Confidence: True confidence comes from knowing your worth and standing firm in that knowledge, no matter the challenges you face.
  • Practicing Gratitude: Gratitude not only grounds you but also propels you forward, helping to maintain a positive outlook even in tough times.
  • Serving Others: Kaye highlighted the importance of giving back, using your success and skills to uplift others, and contributing to the community.

"The more you practice, the more you carve a niche for yourself, you establish an unshakable confidence. There is nothing more attractive than a confident woman. "

This luncheon was a powerful reminder that our heritage and experiences are not just our past—they are the foundation upon which we can build a successful future. By mastering our minds, creating our niche, and serving others with gratitude and confidence, we too can forge a path to greatness. As we continue through this year, let’s keep Kaye’s inspiring words in mind as we shape our own futures with strength and purpose.
